Visit to the British Ceramics Biennial

As part of our observational and reportage project we were given the opportunity to visit the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke a five minute walk from uni campus. This was a special festival which showcased some of the best pottery from a range of artists.

The idea of this trip meant we could look at our surroundings and create some sketches based of the pottery and the overall environment of the exhibition. We began by heading to the bottom floor of the building and were given an hour to create some sketches and really capture some different elements. Below shows some photos i took from this floor as well as my sketchbook pages.

(Photo above shows the main space of the exhibition which was lit up with specific spotlights to really show the pottery and ceramics)

(Above shows a particular piece that caught my eye as I loved the unusual look and idea as it focused on food and has a bright more illustrative style)

(The photo here shows an unusual exhibition which showed a teddy bear head mounted to the wall surrounded by mini ceramic heads, there were also these abstract blobs which had a elements which remind me of coral)

Above is my sketchbook page from this particular floor of the visit, as you can see i was intrigues by the abstract blobs seen in the photo and wanted to capture their different shapes and properties from a range of angles. When it came to looking for subjects I was drawn to the pieces with unusual shapes and textures. I also wanted to include some environment elements so I looks at the brick work surround the space so it could tell more about my drawings. I also had a go at bringing the two together Therefore, on the bottom right you can see  sketch blob in which I also included the background and the display unit. This is something that is out of mu comfort zone so I started of small yet I still feel that it is successful as it tells the viewer about the place and situation.

Once we had spent an hour down stairs we moved our way upstairs to the next part of the exhibition. Above shows one of the creations which were individual pieces that sat together to build an overall city.  I loved how all individual pieces fit together yet all had individual charm.

Above shows my first page of illustrations from this floor, on this you can see some elements which i drew from the ceramics in the photo above. I payed attentions to capturing how it sat together to create an environment and overall piece of art. On this page there were also some other elements I captured including the people that stood in the exhibition, I felt this was a good idea as it would show my viewer other elements of the environment I was in.

Above shows the second page I created in this piece i moved more around this floor looking at other ceramics and focusing on shapes as well as the details. I also wanted to capture some architectural elements as this particular building had incredible curved brick ceilings, the idea of  adding the ceramics with the environment was something very much out of my comfort zone as I like it to look perfect. However, I decided to instead do a rough quick sketch that allowed me to be loose and free with my marks. I was happy with how this looked and feel it is important I keep moving forward and pushing these ideas further.

Overall I really enjoyed this trip and felt it added to our reportage project as it allowed us to capture quick sketches from life which would help communicate the environment we are trying to experience.
If i was to improve on this I would look more at the bigger picture maybe focusing on the room not just the smaller details within it.
