Editorial Evaluation
As part of the illustration and communication project we did two separate projects, one being reportage and the other being about editorial. The editorial project was the second half of the semester after completing a range of reportage tasks and now intended for us to choose our own topic and create two final outcomes based on the chosen subject.
I began by thinking about three topics that meant a lot to me personally, for this I chose plastic pollution relating to global warming, feminism and body image relating to social media. All three subjects are particularly important and should be spoken about for many varied reasons. After completing a drawing task, I decided I wanted to go down the idea of body image relating to social media. Body image is a very current topic with many people feel lots of pressure as the world of social media grows.
I began my project by researching the topic by looking for facts and other articles that have touched on the idea lately. This was an important part of the project as it allowed me to get an idea for the message around it and the real effects that it has on our society at the moment. After doing basic research I began looking at some visual examples, looking at Pinterest and seeing different illustrations of body positivity. This was a great way for me to begin my creation process as it allowed me to generate ideas before creating my own thumbnails.
Once I had completed some basic research, I was able to begin experimenting thinking of the final result in mind. I began by creating some thumbnails inspired by the idea of body image and seeing how I could create an illustration that would pull the reader in. I also started developing some of my favourite thumbnails to see how they could work bigger with the Funiture. It was great to have a group review session as I was able to see other’s thoughts and what the thought of the initial ideas. Also after some critique I felt like some of my ideas felt negative and felt I was trying to highlight one body type whilst shaming that ‘Instagram perfect’ body which goes against the whole point of every body is normal.
Therefore, for my linework for the finished piece I chose to go with the idea of a girl looking into the mirror and instead do her having her ‘body goals’ on the wall she had a range of bodies to remind herself that every body is different and that is okay. I chose this idea as i felt it had more of a personal feel and would be seen as relatable to the reader therefore drawing them into the article.
As for the spot illustration i also wanted to keep the positive theme and therefore played with some negative ideas and twisting them, for example I used a diet pill shape and instead had self-love written over the front to create a contradiction.
Overall, I was really happy with my editorial project, I particularly liked the process and found it so enjoyable to create something that meant so much to me. If I was to improve on my project i think I would have thought more about the typography of the Funiture so it fit better with the title font.
